Warning to Worcestershire heritage attractions amid vandalism spike

HERITAGE attractions in Worcestershire are being warned to take precautions amid fears of a rise in vandalism.

New research commissioned by specialist heritage insurer Ecclesiastical has revealed heritage organisations are a prime target for vandals.

Almost a third (32 per cent) were defaced by graffiti in the past year – up nine per cent on the previous year.

The survey of 500 heritage decision-makers found 32 per cent suffered anti-social behaviour during the past year, up three per cent.

Ecclesiastical is encouraging residents who live near local heritage attractions to be vigilant and report any unusual or suspicious activity.

Overall, nine in 10 heritage organisations in the UK have experienced crime during the past 12 months.

Crime is a top concern for attractions, with nearly six in 10 expecting an increase over the next year.

Nearly seven in 10 of those surveyed are more concerned about crime than ever before.

Faith Kitchen, customer segment director at Ecclesiastical Insurance, said: “Our research shows heritage organisations are a prime target for criminals.

“It’s concerning to see graffiti and anti-social behaviour has increased.

“There are a number of measures heritage organisations can take to better secure property and assets.

“Reviewing perimeter security arrangements, ensuring entry points are well lit and secured can often offer some protection against unwanted visitors.

“CCTV can act as a visual deterrent for those not wanting to be caught on camera. Vigilance from the local community can be a huge help.

“We urge those who live near heritage attractions to be vigilant and report any unusual or suspicious activity they notice.”
