TWO STEAM LOCOMOTIVES worked through Bromsgrove today (Sunday) whilst hauling a tour from Cheltenham Spa to Lancaster to the delight of scores of people who had lined the route to catch a glimpse of the special working, writes Neil Gordon.

The two former LMS locomotives known as Black 5s, numbers 44871 and 45407, were hauling the Railway Touring Company’s ‘Great Britain XVI’ from Cheltenham Spa to Lancaster on day two of its nine-day spectacular around England, Scotland and Wales.

The train departed Cheltenham Spa at 9.00am before passing through Bromsgrove at 9.30am, Barnt Green at 9.35am and Northfield at 9.39am.

A class 47 diesel locomotive, number 47812, was on the rear of the eleven carriage train and provided assistance when it tackled Bromsgrove’s famous Lickey Incline.

Bromsgrove community radio station BRMG filmed the train travelling through Barnt Green. Watch the video below.

The train commenced its epic tour on Saturday in London when it visited Margate and Dover, before travelling through Reading, Swindon and Stroud, and on to Cheltenham Spa for an overnight stay.

Today (Sunday) the train is booked to arrive in Lancaster at 3.30pm for another overnight stay before continuing its journey on Monday when it travels to Glasgow via Carlisle.

Next weekend another steam train is due to work through Bromsgrove when Vintage Trains ‘Welsh Marches Express’ heads back to Birmingham from Cardiff. Timings for this train have yet to be confirmed.
