Volunteers praised for county work

WORCESTERSHIRE County Council has praised the dedicated volunteers who keep footpaths and bridleways clear and tidy.

The authority relies on the team to maintain a network of more than 16,000 public rights of way across the county, including 157 parish path wardens, 22 recreation route wardens and 18 volunteer groups.

Coun Mike Rouse, Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: ‘’The volunteer scheme is a real success as it allows organised local groups to carry out small-scale maintenance on the pathways they have agreed to look after, which is incredibly kind and helpful.

“Someone once said volunteering was the ultimate exercise in democracy.

“You vote in elections now and again, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.

Volunteers have been out in force recently working on several public rights of way.

The Wichenford Volunteer Group has replaced a ditch crossing across a very muddy area, making the crossing considerably better and a group from Catshill has cut back overgrown hedges in Bournheath.

Anothe volunteer group from The British Horse Society (BHS) and their affiliated group Worcestershire Bridle Riders Association (WBRA) spent a day installing some waymark posts on a bridleway near Astley.
