Sounds, sights and smells of past life in Britain coming to the Avoncroft Museum

A REENACTMENT of life in Britain from the stone age through to the Viking era, the 1940’s and beyond will be on display in Bromsgrove this April.

The popular Living History Festival is set to bring the sounds, sights and smells of past life in Britain to the Avoncroft Museum on April 21 and 22.

Organised In partnership with Pike and Shot Events the family focussed Festival will include Vikings, Wellington’s artillery, Napoleonic troops as well as medieval minstrels and demonstrations of historical European martial arts.

There will also be trader stalls, inside and outside, selling historically inspired artefacts from jewellery and hats to handmade tools, costumes and historic pottery.

Dave Allan from Pike and Shot said: “Expect a large interactive Wargame display in the Cockpit where families can join in, based on the Victorian Egyptian Campaign and the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir, and militaria displays with uniforms of the Victorian period.”

In the New Guesten Hall, actor Jason Salkey, best known for playing Harris, the ‘educated rifleman’ in the television series Sharpe will be performing.




And there will be performances from Tudor musicians up on the Weavers Gallery.

Visitors can observe firing displays on the Windmill Field, with another arena hosting various displays including archery and arming a knight on the Guesten Hall lawn.


Museum Director, Zoe Willems, is delighted that Avoncroft Museum is hosting the Festival now in its third year.

“My vision for Avoncroft Museum is for it to be an exciting place where history comes to life.”

“It’s accessible and fun for people of all ages and interests. And it’s amazing how much you can learn when you’re having fun,” she added.

Trains will be running on the model railway from 11am to 3pm on both days, thanks to the Bromsgrove Society of Model Engineers, for just £1 a ride.

The museum have been working with the Transport Museum at Wythall and Worcester Community Rail

Partnership who will provide a free heritage bus shuttle directly to and from Bromsgrove railway station.

Food and drink will be available for sale from street food vendors and from the museum’s tea rooms.
