Plenty to do in the coming weeks for members of Fairfield WI

THERE are a variety of activities in the next few weeks for members of Fairfield WI.

Sheila is holding a MacMillan Coffee Morning in the club house on the recreation ground in Fairfield from 10am to midday next Friday, September 29.

And there will be a visit to John’s Garden at Ashwood Nurseries on September leaving the village hall at 10.30am.

The next meeting of the group will be on October 11, featuring guest speaker Alan Thornton who will talk about The Cadbury Story. The competition will challenge members to create ‘Home-made Chocolate Truffles’.

Also on October 11, two members will be going to Blackwell and Burcot WI’s birthday celebrations.

On October 16 the Annual Council Meeting will be held on the Three Counties Showground on October 16 and the Autumn Group Meeting will be at Catshill Social Club at 7.30pm on October 23. Admission to that will be £5.

At the last meeting President Carol was welcomed back after her recent illness and cards were received from Olga who has retired from the committee and not well at the moment.

The guest speaker was Carol Shaw who talked about jewellery making, her childhood and how her grandmother taught her knitting and sewing.

She started work in an office at 15 but wanted to be an ‘International Fashion Designer’ and she did courses at evening classes. When she realised she wasn’t going to fulfil her ambition she went into jewellery making. She brought some examples of her work which were available for sale and was given a vote of thanks for the talk.

The competition of a ‘Favourite Necklace’ was won by Ann Dalby with an amber necklace, second was Karen Winters and third was Sheila Trueman.

Also at this months meeting, there was a report on August’s produce show which was hailed a great success and a lovely day.

It is the group’s main fund-raiser and the committee was thanked for its help before the winners were revealed.

Meriel Scurrell won the Jack Kenyon Memorial Trophy, Carol Hine took the Leghorn Trophy, Maggie Mason won the Home Craft Cup, The Craft Shield went to Sheila Morris and Anne Galbraith-Jellie triumphed in the photography.

Beverly Cotterill claimed the Rose Bowl, Novice Trophy and Most Points in Show.

Mary thanked Anne for her several months of hard work organising it and she was presented with flowers.

The lunch at The Château Impney with Gyles Brandreth on September 11 was well worth going to. The meal was of a high standard and Gyles went to every table, speaking to everyone.
