New Life Sciences campus at Bournville College to bring 2,000 jobs

MORE THAN 2,000 jobs will be created by a £3.5million development which will see a new Life Sciences Campus built at Bournville College in Longbridge.

The money has been awarded as part of the Government’s Local Growth Fund and the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP).

The state of the art specialist academy will be capable of providing high level training courses and apprenticeships.

And the new centre will include a specially fitted training nursery, simulation training dummies, skills labs and a bring your own technology area which will allow students to use their own laptops in a learning environment.

The new training project will also support the planned development of a Life Sciences Campus next to the University of Birmingham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

As well as this, the academy will also work with private sector partners to act as a feeder to the University of Birmingham and the institute of Translational Medicine.

Principal Norman Cave welcomed the funding.

He said: “We believe the recognition of our current skills deficit by the Government will enable us to provide the training opportunities, required by our community, along with the potential to secure long term employment in an industry, we feel, will have a strong future here in Birmingham.

“The new academy will be an exciting new addition to the growing facilities here at Longbridge and we are now looking forward to welcoming our first students.”

Andy Street, GBSLEP chairman, said: “This Growth Deal is a clear vote of confidence in the economic renaissance of Greater Birmingham and a sign that Government has faith in our ability to deliver.”
