A GROUP of young people have returned from the first ever West Warwickshire Explorer Scouts international trip.

The group, made up of teenagers aged 14 to 18 (Explorers) and 18 to 25 year-olds (Network Scouts) travelled to Belgium to a stay in a bunkhouse in the town of Ypres, in this, the 100th anniversary year of the ending of the First World War.

The week-long visit gave time for the group to learn about the conflict while also enjoying the many attractions of Belgium.

However the main purpose of the trip remained to pay respects to the fallen soldiers of World War One.

To this end, the group visited museums, cemeteries and some of the most famous sites of the war.

They were able to kick a football at the Football Truce site, experience the trenches, while individual Scouts were able to find relatives and namesakes across the cemeteries and memorials.

All of which was documented throughout the week via daily videos available on the West Warwickshire Scout District Facebook page or YouTube channel.

The trip culminated in a parade and laying wreaths at the famous Menin Gate memorial in Ypres.

Gareth Onens, trip leader, said: “Every single member of this group, Explorer or otherwise, felt so honoured to have been a part of the Menin Gate service.

“It has really given us a new perspective on the past and on the importance of peace.

“As leaders we are so proud of our Explorer Scouts.”

West Warwickshire Scouts represents groups in Studley, Alcester, Earlswood as well as sections further afield.
