Figurines promoting child safety take pride of place at Rubery school gates

HOLYWELL Primary School and Nursery has become the first in Worcestershire to promote child safety with figurines of small children outside its gates.
The statuettes are a powerful, graphic reminder for parents to drive safely when dropping off and picking up their children. Four figurines were placed outside the school gates on Wednesday (October 19) after Coun Peter McDonald’s divisional fund covered the £1,400 cost.
He told the Standard: “This particular road is very narrow, in fact it’s a dead end, so we ordered them because it becomes very congested.”
He added incidents like a recent ‘near miss’ involving a child would now be much easier to avoid.
“You can’t help but notice them when driving down the road. I think it’s just the best way of getting people to slow down and improve the safety of children.
“And I think the council ought to find the money to have them placed outside all schools across Worcestershire.”
