County tourism organisation helping firms draw visitors

Bromsgrove Editorial 10th Dec, 2023   0

VISIT Worcestershire – the county’s central tourism organisation – has announced a new business support programme.

The scheme, in conjunction with Access and Inclusion UK, will see 20 businesses supported to improve visitor experience and accessiblilty for all.

Those completing the programme will be ‘Accessibility Champions’ and be tasked with promoting and implementing accessible practices within their own businesses.

The importance of access for all is crucial in today’s environment, particularly when it comes to the tourism and hospitality sector.

Visit Britain’s latest data indicates accessible tourism, or The Purple Pound as it is referred to, is worth £15.3billion in England alone.

The scheme is supported by Visit England’s ambition to be the most accessible destination in Europe by 2025.

Coun Marc Bayliss, Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member for economy, infrastructure and skills, said: “Improving the Worcestershire Welcome for visitors is an important part of our role towards making Worcestershire an inclusive destination for all.”

Central to the scheme will be understanding barriers often faced by people with accessibility requirements and highlighting, often simple, solutions to overcome them.

Businesses need to complete an expression of interest form to be considered and, on completion, companies will receive a £1,000 grant to implement accessibility improvements, following a detailed audit from experts.
