THE ANNUAL Bromsgrove debating competition featuring six schools from across the district will take place next Friday (March 31).

The event, at 6.30pm at North Bromsgrove High School, will be hosted by MP Sajid Javid.

Admission to watch the contest is free and each team will have two pupils in it.

Schools taking part include the holders North Bromsgrove High, South Bromsgrove High, Bromsgrove School, Waseley Hills High. Haybridge High and Hagley RC.

The judging panel will feature Mr Javid, Rev Ray Khan from St John’s Church, parish councillor Janet King and Standard editor Tristan Harris.

Motions will include asking whether ‘voting should be compulsory’, that ‘traditional Morris dancers should no longer blacken their faces’, that ‘the house will ban beauty concerts’ and, the final one, ‘the house believes social networking is making us anti-social’.

Mr Javid said: “This is my seventh local schools debating competition.

“It is a great opportunity for young people to become more confident in public speaking and sharpen their ability to articulate a point of view.

“I’m looking forward to listening to the debates in what is always an enjoyable and close competition.”
