A BROMSGROVE lecturer has won an ‘Outstanding Educator’ award from the University of Chicago.
Dr Michael Thompson received the accolade after being nominated by one of his former International Baccalaureate students who has recently joined the university.
The university runs the awards system as it believes the contribution to young people’s academic and personal development is rarely given the recognition it deserves.
Bromsgrove School, where Dr Thompson lectures and is the Director of the IB Programme, was recently announced as one of the top IB Schools (Large Cohort), being ranked number ten in the prestigious list.
The Diploma is scored from a maximum of 45 points and Bromsgrove School’s average is 39.1.
For the IB, pupils are required to study a variety of subjects including maths, English, a language, a humanities subject, an arts subject and a science. They also have to undertake independent in-depth research for an extended essay, a Theory of Knowledge course and a non-academic element of creativity, activity or service.
Every student entered gained their Diploma and half of them received formal recognition of their bilingualism.
More than two-fifths of our pupils scored 40 points or more with the ‘average’ candidate scoring the equivalent of more than four A* grades at A Level.
Dr Thompson said: “I’m extremely delighted with the award from a fantastic education establishment.
“To have been nominated by such a great student I’ve helped makes it even more special.
“But the real reward comes from teaching the students,” he added.
