HUNDREDS turned up to to see dazzling pyrotechnics, captivating performances and a spectacular fiery finale for Artrix’s 10th birthday.
The outdoor performance of Spellbound by specialists Walk the Plank took place on terrace on Saturday (April 25) and was accompanied by fireworks.
The thrilling tale of love and betrayal was inspired by the Ramayana, an ancient story from India.
Audiences were wowed by the original soundtrack, live narration and sound effects which left all in awe with memories to last a lifetime.
The celebrations started in the afternoon when students from Heart of Worcestershire College performed Quiet Revolution in partnership with Dancefest and Bromsgrove District Council.
As part of the festivities former Birmingham Poet Laureate Giovanni ‘Spoz’ Esposito also performed a special poem he wrote especially for the occasion.
June Griffiths, vice chairman of Artrix’s Board of Trustees, cut the birthday cake and gave a special speech along with Sajid Javid – the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
Ros Robins, Artrix’s interim director, Bromsgrove District Council’s civic head John Ruck and Stuart Laverick, principle for Heart of Worcestershire College, also spoke as part of the celebrations.
Bromsgrove schools and community groups then gathered together for a lantern parade from High Street up to Artrix before the big show kicked off.
Dorothy Wilson, Artrix Board of Trustees’ chair, said the venue was a jewel in North Worcestershire and it was no surprise it was sought after by many British performing artists.
She added: “The far-sightedness of those who for so long advocated its creation, and the generosity and commitment of those who helped to make the building a reality, deserve a salute from all of us who now enjoy the rich diversity of Artrix’s programme, its outreach activities and its creative learning and participation opportunities.”
Mr Javid said in ten years Artrix had evolved from a shell to an outstanding success, providing top class entertainment.
He added: “I’m proud of Artrix – it provides Bromsgrove with a central focus, bringing people of all ages together not only to enjoy the great range of shows on offer but to learn new skills and make friends.”
