BROMSGROVE Sporting boss Paul Smith hopes his side will reward hundreds of travelling fans with victory this weekend in one of the club’s biggest games in its history.

Sporting travel to Watford tomorrow (Saturday) looking to secure victory in their FA Vase last-32 clash against Sun Sports FC.

Hundreds of Sporting fans are set to make the journey hoping the Rouslers can record one of their proudest wins to date against a side placed one level above them in the English non-League football system.

And Sporting go into the game in impressive form, top of Midland League Division One and unbeaten in league games this season.

Smith told the Standard the match has been the talk of the town. “It’s a huge game for everyone involved in this club and the whole town appears to be feeling the excitement of the cup tie,” he said.

“I’ve been to a few pubs over the festive period and everyone I spoke to is talking about going to Watford. It’s great to see and I hope we can put a huge smile on people’s faces.

“The buzz around the club is electric. We’re top of the league and right in form. It’s a great time for the match to come round.

“We are going to be having hundreds of fans making the coach journey there so even though we are away, it will be like a home atmosphere for us. The fans will have a big impact on the game I’m sure.

“What will be the key is if we play at our maximum then we know what we are capable of; if we don’t then we’ll have a good chance of getting beat.”

“If we win, it will be a huge achievement.”

But Sporting will be without first-choice goalkeeper Chris Jay who picked up a groin injury and was ruled out of the 5-0 win against Pershore Town on Bank Holiday Monday.

Smith revealed he was trying to bring in a ready-made replacement in time for the Sun Sports clash. If Smith fails to bring in a new player, the experienced Neil Leech, who played against Pershore, will once again deputise for Jay.

Should Sporting and Sun Sports have to play a replay, it was been earmarked for next Sunday (January 15) at the Victoria Ground.
