Warning after Worcestershire residents fell victim to cold caller HMRC income tax scam

Bromsgrove Editorial 15th Feb, 2020   0

A WORCESTERSHIRE resident has become the latest victim of a cold caller pretending to be from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), writes Ashton Price.

The unnamed victim was told during the call on Sunday they ‘owed an amount of income tax’ with the scammer asking for personal information.

They told the resident they needed to obtain cash and gift cards and that an ‘officer’ would collect them.

West Mercia Police are reminding people their officers, HMRC and banks would never ask for account details or your PINs over the phone and would never ask for payment via gift card or visit to collect items.

If people think they have been called by a scammer they should wait ten minutes then call the non-emergency police number 101.

“Some scam callers can sound legitimate, but if they are asking you to help in an ‘investigation’, be suspicious,” said a police spokesman.

“Please let older family members know of this matter as older people often fall victim to scam callers.”
