THE SOUTHBOUND carriageway of the M42 is closed between Junction 1 to Junction 4a of the M5 after a serious crash involving a lorry which flipped over and then caught fire.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service have sent six crews to the scene who are still battling the blaze. Among them are two crews from Bromsgrove, two from Droitwich, one from Redditch and one from Evesham.

The police are in attendance, as is an ambulance and senior paramedic from West Midlands Ambulance Service.

The road is expected to be closed for some time – at least until 3.30pm and those using the area are being diverted on an alternate route.

Drivers should leave the carriageway at Junction1 and travel along the A38 where they will be able to pick up the M5 again at Junction 4 (Lydiate Ash).
