MYSTERY surrounds the new Wythall parkrun which began last weekend with a successful inaugural event but has now been cancelled for the next two weeks.

The news comes as a blow to participants after the event in Wythall Park attracted 354 runners who enjoyed trying out the new course and taking part.

The Standard was contacted by Coun Adam Kent, who represents the area on Worcestershire County Council, is a keen runner and was at last Saturday’s parkrun.

He said: “It’s extremely disappointing that this has happened.

“This is exactly the kind of event the park should be used for and we need to support it.

“To see everyone taking part in the first Wythall parkrun, especially so many children and young people, was absolutely brilliant.

“The park has received a lot of public money, including £27,500 from the New Homes Bonus for new showers.

“What is the point of having them if not for events like this.”

A Bromsgrove District Council spokesperson told The Standard: “The event has not been cancelled, it has been postponed for the next fortnight so a few teething problems can be ironed out.

“It will be back on October 6 and we hope the runners come out again for that one as they did for the first one.”
