LIVE BLOG - Students across Bromsgrove celebrate GCSE results

Bromsgrove Editorial 24th Aug, 2023 Updated: 24th Aug, 2023   0

AFTER a hard fought two years, Bromsgrove’s GCSE students arrive at schools across the region to collect their results and find out if all their hard work has paid off.

Pupils will be hoping they’ve got the grades they need to progress onto sixth-form, college or other training and employment.

This year’s GCSE results are following a new numerical grading system which scores students from 9 to 1 rather than the previous alphabetical grading of A to E.

North Bromsgrove High School

STUDENTS at North Bromsgrove High School were celebrating another excellent set of GCSE results on Thursday (August 24).

Many students gained top grades including Sophia James, Alfie Smailes, Sydney Dickinson and Bailey Depper-Gwilliams.

The school staff and leaders were also incredibly proud of pupils Louis Hicken, Jenna Joji, Libby Wood and Lexie Galt who made superb progress from their starting points.

Pupils will now be gearing up to progress onto sixth-form, college or other training and employment opportunities.

Headteacher Nick Gibson said: “We are overjoyed with another strong set of GCSE results and our students and staff should feel very proud.

“These results epitomise North’s success in providing an education which enables our students to pursue their highest goals and aspirations.

“We celebrate the success of all students equally and their achievements should not be underestimated.

“Such success reflects the high expectations we have of our students, the high quality of teaching delivered by staff, the support and leadership of the governing body and, last but certainly not least, the endeavours of our fantastic students.”

Anna Ingram, deputy headteacher said: “Schools do not succeed in isolation and any credit should be shared equally across our North family.”

“These results complement our Sixth Form A Level results which were released last week.”

Waseley Hills High School

After much hard work studying and preparing, students at Waseley Hills in Rubery are collecting a set of ‘fantastic’ GCSE results.

Overall, students achieved well with pleasing numbers achieving grades 9-4 across all subjects.

Subjects that saw particular success were geography and mathematics, where over 35 per cent of students achieved a grade 6 or above, and physics where over 40 per cent of students achieved a grade 6 or above.

The students are now looking forward to progressing onto their chosen further education institutions, with many remaining at Waseley Hills to take their A Levels and Level 3 qualifications.

While all students have done incredibly well, there are some standout individual achievements. These include:

  • Harry Hopwood who achieved a Grade 9 in maths, six Grade 8’s and two Grade 7’s.
  • Jessica Peters who achieved a Grade 9 in maths, four Grade 8’s and two Grade 7’s.
  • Joshua Chambers who achieved a Grade 9 in maths, two Grade 8’s and two Grade 7’s.

Tom Preston, head of school, said:  “We are really pleased to see our Year 11 students do so well in a year of so much change.

“These results are testament to the hard work, talent and dedication of our brilliant students.

“We wish them all the best in their next steps and thank all of our staff and parents who have supported them so admirably.”

South Bromsgrove High School

South Bromsgrove High is pleased to report outstanding achievements by its students in their GCSEs this summer.

Sean Drew, who achieved eight grade 9 GCSE’s. s

Over three quarters of students achieved a grade 4 in both English and maths, and a quarter of students achieved a grade 7, equivalent to an A grade, for their English or maths GCSEs.

Twelve percent of the year group achieved grades 8 and 9 in all of their subjects.

Over 200 students from the school will continue their further education at South Bromsgrove’s Sixth Form.

Chris Smith, headteacher said: “We are immensely proud of all the work and achievements of our students and we look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future.

“We are grateful for the support of parents, carers and teaching staff to students in helping them to achieve these strong outcomes.

“Against a national backdrop of grade reduction our students have achieved outcomes in excess of the previous 2019 cohort, with an English and Maths pass rate in line with 2022 outcomes.

“Our students are in a strong position to progress onto further education and study and we are delighted that we will welcome a number of these students back to our Sixth form in September.”

Miss Clipson, Head of Year 11 added: “I am very proud of the results achieved by our Year 11 students this year.

“I have watched students in this year group flourish both in a classroom setting as well as on an extra curricular basis.

“I wish our leavers every success as they move on to the next stage of their journey.

“I am confident that their experience of a rainy Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Eisteddfod, and our diverse house competition programme will remain with them for years to come.”

Hagley Catholic High School

Leaders at the school are ‘incredibly proud’ of their year 11 students for their GCSE achievements.

The pupils at Hagley achieved success with the percentage of grades 9 to 7 being above the national average, while the percentage of students with grades 9 to 4 being 11 per cent above the national average.

Mr Hodgson, Principal of Hagley Catholic High School, commented, “I am hugely proud of every single student in Year 11 at Hagley, and it was wonderful to celebrate with them this morning.

“They can be rightly proud of their achievements and the futures they have created for themselves.

“No-one should lose sight of the impact of the pandemic and the formal education that was so disrupted back in 2020 and 2021.

“That they have done so well is credit to them and the marvellous team of staff at Hagley that have worked with them to achieve as they have.”

Mrs Horan, Catholic Senior Executive Leader (CEO), added, “We are thrilled with these wonderful results which reflect the hard work of students and staff alike.

“Thank you to our families for their support and to our staff who have worked tirelessly to prepare our young people to successfully move on to their next chosen pathway.

“A special thank you to our students who have faced the ongoing challenges arising from the pandemic with strength, determination and resilience.

“I wish them every success for the future.”

The school are now looking forward to welcoming a new sixth-form cohort of internal and external students in September.
