Labour Party selects Dr Michael Thompson as its general election candidate for Bromsgrove

THE LABOUR Party has selected Dr Michael Thompson as its candidate for the forthcoming general election.

Dr Thompson is the chairman of the local Labour Party, is the deputy leader of the Labour Group on Bromsgrove District Council and has represented the ward of Rock Hill on the authority for the last two years.

He has campaigned against and voted against large scale planning developments in the district that did not consider the wider infrastructure and has worked with the local county representatives to protest about M5 traffic.

His motion to ban circuses using wild animals from operating on land owned by the district council was also successfully passed, along with one on the authority only using environmentally friendly products in the Council House.

And he has organised campaigns in Bromsgrove to highlight cuts to the NHS and, specifically, local services.

He is also opposed to the removal of the sports hall at the Dolphin Centre.

Professionally he has a first class honours degree and PhD in physics and moved to Bromsgrove 12 years ago to teach the subject after working as a physicist and teacher in the north of England.

He has held the positions of head of physics and head of science, and currently holds the position of director of the International Baccalaureate.

Dr Thompson lives in Bromsgrove with his wife Carrie and two children, Leia and Romana.

On his appointment he told The Standard: “The constituency of Bromsgrove faces many challenges.

“Bromsgrove has been a safe Tory seat for too long.

“It has allowed its MPs to neglect the town and its residents, whilst they arrogantly pursue a glamour career in Westminster.”

He claims the department Sajid Javid was responsible for made the decision to cut the Revenue Support Grant (money paid to local authorities), causing financial problems for the district council and said the Government has done nothing to help the district while it fell victim to badly-planned M5 diversions.

“It does not have to be like this. Bromsgrove is a wonderful town and we do not have to suffer Tory incompetence and neglect anymore.

“If elected as MP for Bromsgrove, I will work tirelessly to represent the interests of the people of this town in Parliament.”

“When it comes to fighting for issues that face the people of Bromsgrove – be it the unnecessary cuts to NHS healthcare, the closing of our children’s centres or our flawed highways system – one needs only to read the local press to see that it is the Labour Party that has led the fight.”
