Catshill School Pupils learn by ‘taking the lead’

YOUNGSTERS from Catshill First School and Nursery have been given a helping hand, thanks to Canine Assisted Intervention Therapy and a visit by black labrador Yogi and his handler Vicki.

The project is run by Taking the Lead, which is accredited by The Kennel Club’s Bark and Read scheme.

Drawing on children’s natural enthusiasm with animals, the programme can be adapted to provide tailored support for children for reading, language development, confidence, stress management and motivation to learn.

Assistant headteacher Adam Rivett said: “ Our pupils have greatly benefited from one-to-one sessions and we have seen a great increase in confidence within school life and their ability to discuss their feelings with others.

“Yogi’s visits are a highlight of the week and we would love to offer this experience to more of our pupils.”

Vicki is looking for sponsors to enable her to continue and expand the programme in order to help more children.

Anyone wanting more information on sponsoring the scheme or accessing the programme should call 07956 040012.
