THE TESCO Express in Northfield will close its doors on March 17 putting 15 jobs at risk.
The store on Bristol Road South is one of 43 across the UK which the supermarket giant deems to be unprofitable.
Tesco wrote to MP Richard Burden informing him of the decision and a consultation began on Wednesday (January 28) with those working at the store.
Mr Burden told The Standard described Tesco pulling out of Northfield High Street as ‘dreadful news’.
“I am in contact with Tescos and will be talking to them over the coming days about the implications of their plans for our area and the impact on staff.
“I am also talking to Usdaw who represent the staff.
“The health of Northfield High Street is vital for our local economy and I am already in touch with Northfield Business Improvement District, the Northfield Community Partnership and Brett O’Reilly, Birmingham City Council’s Chair of Northfield District, to discuss our local response to this decision.”
A Tesco spokesperson said: “We will be speaking to colleagues individually over the coming weeks and where possible we will offer them alternative roles.”
