Rubery Wombles to hold open day at its new community garden

Bromsgrove Editorial 28th Jul, 2022   0

AN OPEN day is being held on Saturday at the new Deelands Community Garden which local volunteers have been creating in Rubery.

The plot, behind Deelands Hall on Deelands Road, is the brainchild of the Rubery Wombles since early June when funding for it was provided by Birmingham City Council.

The cash was allocated as part of the authority’s financial support for physical activity and wellbeing projects – a programme designed to help maximise Birmingham’s proud host city status for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Jane Winson, from the Rubery Wombles, said: “Although we still have work to do, we are holding the opening day so we can coincide it just after the start of the games.”

Rubery and Rednal Councillor Adrian Delaney has the honour of officially opening the garden at 10am and there will be light refreshments until midday.

Jane added: “All the produce grown in the garden – including apples from our orchard donated by Thatchers cider – is for the local community.

“We hope as many people as possible can come along and support this feelgood story for this area of Rubery and help spread the word about the project.”
