Bromsgrove Climate Action take protest over Mozambique Gas Project to MP's office

A CAMPAIGN group wrote to Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid this week about the Government’s controversial plan to use £1billion to fund the Mozambique Natural Gas project.

Bromsgrove Climate Action – who also demonstrated with placards outside his office in the town – claim it should not be happening as it was not in line with the Paris Agreement target of 1.5 degree maximum rise in global temperature which the Prime Minister vocally supported at COP26.

The Government was challenged in court in December over the move by Friends of the Earth which is awaiting a decision.

Judith Tipper from Bromsgrove Climate Action said: “This project, in preparation alone, has caused widespread violence, with families driven from their homes and even killed, and the energy companies paying for ‘protection of their interests’ by local soldiers.

“It is sited on a pristine coastline and will do irreversible damage to the environment on land and sea.

“The construction alone will increase Mozambique’s carbon emissions by 10 per cent and will add 4.5billion tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere.”

She added if the UK withdrew now it would send a strong message the country was serious about leading the world on climate change and encourage other nations to make their own commitments.

“If we go ahead, it will trash any such claims – the UK taxpayers should not be funding this.”

She urged other residents to write to Mr Javid, adding the group was still awaiting a response from the MP.
