52 per cent of private renters in West Midlands unable to afford rent

Bromsgrove Editorial 25th Sep, 2019   0

MORE than half of working renters in the West Midlands are only one pay cheque away from losing their home, according to new research on behalf of the homeless charity Shelter.

Pollsters YouGov found that, with little or no savings to fall back on, 52 per cent of private renters in the region could not afford to pay their rent for more than a month if they lost their job.

Looking at the national picture, the situation is particularly bleak for families with children in England.

The charity found 60 per cent, or 760,000 working families who rent privately, could be just one pay cheque away from losing their home.
