POLICE in West Mercia and Warwickshire have launched an operation to crack down on driving offences, writes Ellen Heaselgrave.
Operation Tramline, which began on Monday and runs until June 18, sees officers using a specialised HGV to identify people committing driving offences across the force’s road network.
Drivers breaking the law will then be stopped and dealt with by other police vehicles.
The HGV, a tractor cab, will be used as a spotter vehicle, as the raised position above the drivers allows officers to see into vehicles.
Police officers will be able to more accurately identify the use of mobile phones, illegal speeds, motorists not wearing seat belts and those driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Operation Tramline is a new method used by officers, with the aim to promote, educate and reinforce driving laws and road safety messages.
The scheme will target the most common factors in fatal traffic collisions, such as using mobile phones whilst driving.
Insp Andrew Bentley from the Road Safety Team said it was a jount operation with Highways England which owned the cab and loaned it to the force.
“We are always looking for new ways to get road safety messages across to the public and identify those that choose not to comply.”
