MORE than 1,000 visitors to Avoncroft Museum on Saturday and Sunday (June 4 and 5) stepped back in time to the First World War.
The year of 2016 was put in the spotlight with a number of living history displays, thanks to a collaboration between the museum and The Great War Society.
Those who went along were able to meet British troops in the infantry camp as they prepared for The Battle of the Somme and see how those in the field kitchen prepared the food the soldiers would have had during training.
Wounded soldiers were being treated in the 24th general hospital and there were demonstrations of how soldiers used their rifles, the Lewis Light Machine Gun, and hand grenades in battle.
Visitors could also watch the first British documentary and propoganda film of the conflict ‘The Somme’ in the authentic travelling cinema.
Lucy Lewis, Avoncroft Museum’s head of engagement, said: “The Great War Society put on fantastic arena shows that entertained the crowds whilst visitors found the service in Bringsty Church thought provoking, sincere and touching.”
Funded through Heritage Lottery Fund, Worcestershire World War One Hundred is one the largest programme of events across England commemorating the First World War involving cultural and heritage organisations county-wide from 2014 until 2018.
