RUBERY was turned red and white for St George’s Day as more than 30 traders took part in the annual window dressing competition.

Many sightings of St George and numerous dragons were spotted as paintings created by pupils at Hollywell and Beaconside Schools were displayed in the local shops and library. The joint winners of the contest were Scissor Stitch and Polly Put The Kettle On.

And, in a closely-fought battle all round, there was also a joint third place – awarded to Specs 4U Opticians and the Age UK charity shop.

Lyn Burgwin, who judged the competition said “There were some very creative and colourful displays with a very close result and we commend the traders for their efforts and participation”.

The competition was one of four events targeted at different age groups in the community by the Rubery St George’s Society, to encourage residents to celebrate our nation’s saint’s day.
