AN ELDERLY care-home resident was given an unexpected surprise, in the form of a trip back to her old family home after many years.

Evelyn Warren, who resides at St John’s nursing home in Bromsgrove, was contacted by a lady living in her old house.

Ruth Edwards got in touch with the home, hoping to track down Evelyn who, along with her late husband, built the house and wonderful gardens that Ruth now enjoys so much.

In an extremely generous act of kindness, Ruth invited the elderly Evelyn to the visit the house as well as contacting the National Garden Scheme about it.

When first told about the idea, Evelyn was overjoyed to be invited and looked forward to the visit.

Although poor of eyesight, staff at St John’s said Evelyn remembered all of the journey to her old house and immediately recognised the building.

Tears of joy were soon being shed in the garden, as Evelyn recalled the many happy years she spent at the house with her beloved husband.

She later thanked Ruth for the invite and said the entire occasion was ‘wonderful’.

Evelyn also met Dave Morgan, organiser for the National Garden Scheme, on her visit.

Staff at St John’s have expressed their appreciation for Ruth’s getting in contact.

They said Evelyn was touched by the gesture and was thankful for the opportunity and the memories that the visit  brought up.
