MORE than 30 people enjoyed The Big Lunch event in Northfield on Sunday (June 1).
It was organised by the town’s Ecocentre and saw participants take along food for a communal picnic.
The Big Lunch, at the Maesfield Community Garden, was funded by the Big Lottery Fund and led by the Eden Project.
There was a ride ran in partnership with Cycle South Brum – that began at Victoria Common and concluded at the garden in time for the lunch and youngsters were also able to make solar-powered junk models, including boats and windmills.
Anne Dasgupta, one of the organisers, said the day was great fun.
“Last year we moved our lunch to the Community Gardens, which we have developed as a place for the community by growing food and holding school sessions and this year we also had a great turnout.
“The area is home to families who live in flats with a very low income and the gardens were used as a bit of a dumping ground before the Ecocentre took them over.”
She added the Ecocentre worked a lot with the community, running energy efficiency projects and family activities during the school holidays and the organisers of those activities wanted to say a big thank you to the community for their involvement and for joining in with the Big Lunch.
Northfield Ecocentre, which began in 2009, offers practical advice and ideas on how to make lifestyles more green and sustainable.
