Third man arrested for Northfield murder

A THIRD man has been charged with the murder of teenager Sheriff Mbye in Northfield.

Montell Stephens, 18, of William Savage Way, Smethwick, was charged yesterday afternoon (April 30) and is due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court today (1 May).

West Midlands Police believe the stabbing of the 18-year-old was not gang-related.

Sheriff died in hospital on April 17 after being stabbed several times during a fight on Bristol Road South, near to KFC.

Stephens was also injured during the dispute and was immediately taken to hospital. He was arrested on suspicion of murder on April 24 but he was not deemed fit for questioning until Wednesday evening (April 29).

Rakeem Riley, 18, of no fixed address, and Omar Robinson, 21, from Rann Close in Ladywood, were also arrested on suspicion of murder and were remanded in custody after appearing in court on April 21.

It is believed Riley and Robinson were friends with Sheriff, who was from Lee Bank, and travelled with him to Northfield that day.

Det Insp Jim Munro said despite the arrests his team were still actively seeking witnesses but it was a significant step forward in their investigation.

And while the response from the public in Northfield and in Birmingham had been excellent they remained keen to hear from anyone with information about the murder.

“Our investigations into exactly what happened will continue and you may notice more police in the Northfield area as we carry on with our enquiries,” he said.

“We understand Northfield has been shocked by Sheriff’s murder and we are working really hard with local people, local businesses and partners to get back to normality as soon as possible.

“In the meantime, we want everyone to carry on with their business as usual and enjoy Northfield as a safe place to visit, work and spend time.”

Anyone with any information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
