Bromsgrove Men's D climb to the top of the table

BROMSGROVE Men’s D team climbed to the summit of Division Six of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Winter League with a commanding 4-0 win over Stourbridge E.

With Sunday morning’s conditions not the best to play in, Bromsgrove’s pairs of Tim Wright with John Casey and Tim Roland with Mel McGregor outclassed Stourbridge with some assured play.

Wright and Casey opened up with a 6-0, 6-0 straight sets victory and Brosmgrove were never in danger of dropping a set.

Captain McGregor said: “It’s very tight at the top of the table so getting maximum points today, without dropping a set, puts the pressure on other teams to catch us.

“The whole team played well and we’re going into our last match against former leaders Droitwich full of confidence.”

There was also good news for the Men’s G team but it was a much closer affair against Worcester D in Division 12.

Mark Wilson teamed up with debutant Giles Hyder to beat Worcester’s second pair but came unstuck against the first pair.

The juniors of Ethan Oakes and Dan Andrews delivered a good performance as they too beat the second Worcester pair with ease before going down to the opposition’s first pair.

Despite Bromsgrove taking an extra set, it was not enough to claim a bonus win point in a close contest but the result keeps the Men’s G team in with a chance of gaining promotion in their inaugural season.

The Ladies E team could not muster up a similar result in Division Eight as they lost their final match 4-0 to a Worcester B.

The team of Ros Crooke, Catherine Maund, Sue Murray and Lorraine Russell struggled against a Worcester side working their way up the divisions.

Captain Sheila Richardson said: “After promotion last year, we knew it would be tough this year and a couple of injuries to the squad didn’t help.

“It looks like we have done enough to stay up which is a real credit to all the players.”

Elsewhere, the Ladies G team, who were also promoted last season, lost 3-1 against Old Hill B in Division 10.
