BROMSGROVE Sporting Women won the Midwest Counties Football League title after thrashing Malvern Town 5-0 to finish the season unbeaten.

Sporting went into the game against closest challengers Malvern needing just a single point to claim the title at the Victoria Ground.

And Bromsgrove won the title in style as Beth Breen and Sophie Taylor scored braces before Laura Shanley completed the scoring in front of more than 200 spectators.

Sporting finished the season with 13 wins and one draw from their 14 matches and are now awaiting a date for their play-off semi-final.

Bromsgrove will play the second placed team in Division Two with the winner of that game to face either Malvern or the winners of Division Two.

Ladies manager Alan Horton said: “Sporting Ladies were only formed four years ago and we lost one season through Covid.

“We have finished fourth in each of our full seasons previously, but this season we have taken the league by storm, going unbeaten and only conceding six goals all year.

“We also have a league cup quarter final this Sunday.

“I’m extremely proud of all the players and coaches – no matter how small a part they have played. This season, our ladies are the invincibles and it’s well deserved. I can’t tell you how much this means.”

Sporting took the lead after just minutes when Breen calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner from Vicky Grady’s pass.

And Bromsgrove doubled their lead on 17 minutes as Taylor drilled the ball past the goalkeeper from debutant Katie Ellis’s through ball.

After Sporting goalkeeper Rosie Parslow made a routine save, Taylor scored the home side’s third goal five minutes before half time when she turned in Heather Rigby’s initial effort.

Bromsgrove all but sealed the title on 81 minutes when Breen scored her second of the game with a powerful finish into the top right corner from Nat Sabin’s pass.

And Sporting completed the scoring in the final minute as Shanley fired home Ellie Nash’s cutback to ensure Bromsgrove finished the season unbeaten.

Bromsgrove District Council chairman Coun Sam Ammar was in attendance with the ladies led out of the tunnel by the club’s under-9’s team.
