A FORMER councillor and ex-Worcestershire County Council chairman who served both Bromsgrove and Droitwich has died at the age of 87.

Maurice Broomfield passed away on June 7 after a brief period of illness.

Maurice reached his 50-year milestone as a local councillor after being first elected to Bromsgrove Urban District Council in 1965.

He had been a serving member of Worcestershire County Council for the last 19 years.

In 1997 he was elected to represent Droitwich Rural and then Ombersley division for Worcestershire County Council and remained a member until he sadly passed away. He sat on many committees and in 2006 became Chairman of Worcestershire County Council.

Although officially retired, he was still a partner of a horticulture and plant nursery business, SHM Broomfield and Son.

Prior to his work with Worcestershire County Council, he was a district councillor for Bromsgrove for over 30 years.

Chairman of Worcestershire County Council Tony Miller said he worked closely with Maurice for a number of years both at Worcestershire County Council and earlier when he was a district councillor.

“He was very well liked and I always found him a gentleman and a pleasure to work with.

“His work as a councillor was highly regarded, as was his commitment to the local community he served.

“An active member of the community, he was a good example of how to be a senior councillor.”

He described Maurice’s death as a ‘sad loss’ and offered his sincere condolences to his loved ones.

Maurice’s funeral will be held at 2.30pm on Wednesday (June 22) at St Mary’s Church, Elmbridge.

There will be family flowers only on the day but charitable donations can be sent in Maurice’s memory to Rotary Club, Droitwich.

A collection will also be taken at the service.
