Lodes at Artrix for LGBT month

Bromsgrove Editorial 28th Jan, 2015 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

A VARIETY of activities will be held at Bromsgrove’s Artrix throughout February to mark the annual LGBT (Lesbian Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) History Month.

On Sunday (February 1), there will be the National Theatre live (Encore) screening of DV8’s powerful production John.

It is based on a touching story of a troubled man and the challenges he faces.

Because it features adult themes and languages, it is suitable for over 18s only.

A free family fun event will take place from 6.30pm on Thursday (February 5). That will feature stalls, refreshments, face-painting, balloon modelling and glitter tattoos.

Then, at 7.30pm, the original 1988 film Hairspray starring Ricki Lake, Divine and Debbie Harry will be screened at the School Drive venue.

The film is a PG and tickets are free – they are available from Artrix box office on the night. The event has been made possible thanks to support from Bromsgrove District Council.

Then, next Sunday (February 8), fans of Oscar Wilde will be captivated by a dramatisation of ‘De Profundis’ – Wilde’s letter to Lord Alfred Douglas from Reading Gaol.

Wilde Without the Boy is directed by award-winning Gareth Armstrong and performed by Gerard Logan.

Artrix Learning and Engagement is also working with North Bromsgrove High School to offer year nine and ten students a performance and workshops designed to address the issue of homophobic bullying in schools.

‘Straight Talking’ is being performed by Birmingham-based company Round Midnight.

Artrix learning and engagement co-ordinator TC Peppercorn said she was pleased North – with the support of the council and LGBT Unison – was able to host the show and the workshops.

“It’s vital young people are made aware of issues around equality and that their comments to others can have a powerful effect.

“Bullying of youngsters who may be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender can have tragic consequences and it needs to stop.”

Other events and exhibitions will be taking place across Bromsgrove and Redditch – visit www.bromsgrove.gov.uk – for more information.
