Bromsgrove pupils attend code breaking event

PUPILS from OEBZF TEBIR ABEG U – the codename for ‘North Bromsgrove’ – hosted a special code breaking event where they deciphered hidden messages.

The event was influenced by a North school trip to Bletchley Park where Enigma was broken by mathematicians during the Second World War.

The battle of the brains challenged year seven students from schools across Bromsgrove, including Parkside, Catshill, St John’s, Alvechurch and Aston Fields.

Head of maths at North Bromsgrove High School, Nick Wynne, said: “Pupils from across Bromsgrove joined in and competed in pairs alongside more experienced mathematicians just in case they got stuck.”

A variety of secret codes were taken on, including the Pigpen Cipher, Morse Code, Semaphore and a Cipher Disk.

Mr Wynne added: “It was a fascinating trip and the pupils were really engaged with the idea of code words.”
