MORE than 50 people gathered at Bromsgrove’s war monument on Monday morning (June 23) to commemorate Armed Forces Day.

Among them were residents, those who have served over the years and district councillors, chief executive Kevin Dicks and other council staff.

After a parade led by Mark Guy, the batallion sports officer and detachment commander for Redditch HWACS (Hereford and Worcestershire Army Cadets) the district’s Civic Head Coun John Ruck gave a short speech.

“We are here today to raise the flag for the Armed Forces and the work they do in keeping us safe.”

He paid tribute to the army, navy and air force, along with the police and fire service, before raising the flag.

After the ceremony, tea, coffee and biscuits were served at Amphlett Hall.

The official date for Armed Forces Day is tomorrow (Saturday) when other parades and events will be held up and down the country.

The standard was raised as part of the ceremony.
