SAINSBURY’S has again had to confirm it will be bringing its superstore to Bromsgrove after a retailer moved onto the Birmingham Road site it is planned for.

WHAT! Stores Ltd confirmed to The Standard its new shop in the former Focus DIY premises had been set up on what ‘was not a short-term lease’ and would bring with it 40 full and part-time jobs.

The Welsh-based company said interviewing was currently under way for the roles and the variety store would open its doors in mid-October.

It will sell a range of items, including furniture, textiles, hardware, homewear and more.

We contacted Sainsbury’s about the development and a spokesperson said: “We have previously confirmed that the Bromsgrove Sainsbury’s is not on our construction programme for the next 15 months, but hope to be in a position to let the community know our schedule for its development as soon as possible.

“The lease for the site will allow the retail park to continue actively trading whilst including break clauses that will allow us to develop our store on the site when we are in a position to do so.”

WHAT! Stores Ltd has a number of branches in towns and cities, including Cardiff, Aberaman, Newport, Caerphilly, Cwmbran, Gloucester and Bristol.

The Bromsgrove store manager Barry Hughes said the company was excited about opening a store in the town.

“There’s everything from pound products to furniture.

“People liken us to Wilko, The Range, Home Bargains and Poundland – if you threw all those up in the air, what came down would be a WHAT!Store.

“There’s not many people who come in and leave without buying anything.

“People have said we remind them of the old Woolworths – there really is something for everyone.

“People will be glad to see a few products that they haven’t seen for a few years.”
