ALMOST 150 people gathered at Bromsgrove’s war monument in Crown Close to remember The Late Queen Elizabeth II.
The short ceremony was announced yesterday after the Monarch’s passing at Balmoral on Thursday afternoon.
After announcements by Town Crier Kevin Ward, the Vicar of St John’s Church and Bromsgrove Royal British Legion Chaplain Rev Ray Khan opened the service with a prayer for The Queen while the church bells rang out.
Rev Khan then played ‘Sunset’ on the bugle which is usually played at the end of the day by the military to signal ‘the duties have been done’.
An impeccable two-minute silence was then observed, followed by three cheers for King Charles III.
The service was concluded with a prayer was said for the new King and the Royal Family and the National Anthem.
Afterwards, Rev Khan said The Queen would always be known for the way she fulfilled her duties during her 70-year reign.
“I think, considering the short timescale to organise, it was great that people of all ages and backgrounds came together for a simple act of remembrance.”
Bromsgrove District Council Chairman, Coun Rod Laight added: “It was so touching to see so many people here come out to give their support and organisations represented, including the Scouts, Guides, Royal British Legion and the Court Leet.
“It was a fitting ceremony and a great turn-out.”
Tomorrow (Sunday) – at 3pm in Sanders Park – Bromsgrove’s official Proclamation of King Charles III will take place at the bandstand in Sanders Park.
