POLICE who pulled over a motorist for driving too close to cyclists as he passed them was found to have defective tyres.
The incident happened earlier today on the A38 in Bromsgrove.
Officers from Worcestershire Operational Patrol Unit gave him words of advice and then checked to see if his vehicle was roadworthy.
They found his tyres had less than the 1.6mm amount of tread on them – below the legal limit.
He was reported for the offence and was prohibited from driving the vehicle until the issue was sorted.
Following the incident, officers have urged drivers to check their tyres and the tread and get them changed if they are below the legal limit.
Operation Close Pass
Police stop drivers overtaking cyclists too closely under the Operation Close Pass scheme.
Drivers should give cyclists a berth of 1.5metres if passing at 30mph or 2metres if the speed is higher.
Motorists can receive a £100 fine and three pentalty points on their licence for careless driving if they fail to do so.
Last year, West Mercia Police extended ‘Operation Close Pass’ to help protect horse riders too.
Operation Snap
Drivers with dash cams can also submit footage of this or other motoring offences under West Mercia Police’s Operation Snap campaign.
