ALMOST 100 people gathered for Bromsgrove’s annual Armistice Day parade at the Odd Fellows Memorial on the High Street.

Among those present were army cadets and representatives from the Bromsgrove Royal British Legion.

An announcement was made by Town Crier Kevin Ward before Rev Ray Khan, the Bromsgrove RBL Chaplain, led the service.

At 11am, there was a beautifully observed two-minute silence punctuated by The Last Post and Reveille when the RBL standards were lowered.

Rev Khan said: “It was a brilliant turn-out.

“As ever, it’s a tradition in the town we will continue to maintain.

“It was particularly poignant this year with everything going on in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.

“And it served as a reminder we are all called to peace.”

Bromsgrove District Council Chairman, Coun Sam Ammar, who was also there, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people turn out to pay their respects and honour those who gaves their lives for the future of this country.”

In memory of grandfather

Another person at the service was David Green. He had with him a pocket ‘Active Servant’ New Testament (pictured below) which was carried by his grandfather Private Samuel Green. He carried it all the way through the First World War from 1914 to 1918.

David said: “I bring it every year – it feels comforting to know I have something of his when I come to remember those who gave their lives.

“It was effectively a pocket bible.

“My dad had ‘Samuel’ as his middle name in his memory.”

The event was the first event of this Remembrance weekend. A number of Remembrance Sunday parades and services will take place across the district tomorrow (Sunday, November 12)
