THE RAISING of the Armed Forces Flag took place at County Hall on Monday.
A number of dignitaries attended a short ceremony at the authority’s Worcester headquarters.
Among them were Dr Gilbert Greenall, the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Worcestershire, the county council’s strategic director of commercial and change, Andrew Spice and chairman Coun Kyle Daisley.
Council vice-chairman Coun Alan Amos and Coun Richard Morris, chair of Worcestershire’s Armed Forces Covenant Partnership, also attended, along with David Williams from The Royal British Legion who carried the County Colours Standard.
Short speeches were given by Dr Greenall and Coun Daisley.
Dr Greenall said: “Today is a day we remember and thank those who have served and continue to serve their country, including the Forces Cadets, who are one of the largest voluntary youth organisations in the country with around 130,000 members.
“We tend to concentrate in the past on the world wars, even though very few who served are still with us, or we remember the more recent postings in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan, but today also presents an opportunity to thank those who are still serving across several countries including Belize, Brunei, and Cyprus.”
Coun Morris added: “It gives us great pride raising the Armed Forces flag as a symbol of our thanks for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community today, our serving troops and their families, reservists, veterans, and cadet forces.”
Coun Daisley said: “I would like to mark this day with a special mention to our workforce who are reservists, adult cadet volunteers, veterans, spouses and others who have a proud and strong family connection to those who are serving or have served.”
