CHARFORD First School which opened its new school library in November last year is in the running for a prestigious national accolade.

The school is on the final shortlist of the primary school section of the School Library Association’s (SLA) Inspiration Awards.

The winner will receive £750 to spend on library resources for the school.

Charford First School’s library, which has a woodland theme, clearly caught the eye of the judges and on October 2 the school’s teaching assistant librarian Jackie Strange will be journeying to the awards ceremony where the winners will be revealed.

Jackie told The Standard it was great that the school’s library had been shortlisted for the ‘inspiring libraries’ award.

“The award is given to the school library that shows inspiration, innovation, creativity and resourcefulness in its design and use.

“We are very excited and proud that our library has been shortlisted for this prestigious award.

“Our PFA worked tremendously hard to organise events which have been fully supported by our children and their families to help fund this wonderful, calm and peaceful environment where the children can develop a love of books and reading.”

For the title they will be up against other schools including Adderley Primary in Birmingham and New Milton Infants, Hants.

The organisers of the awards at the SLA said it had received the greatest number of nominations for both the primary and secondary categories of the Inspiration Award.

After much discussion these were whittled down to two longlists – one for secondary and one for primary schools.

Visits took place with two judges attending each school and then the shortlists were agreed.
