Bromsgrove man's claims over 'health nightmare' caused by burst pipe under his flat

A TOWN man who claims he has suffered a ‘health nightmare’ said he ‘wants answers’ from Bromsgrove District Housing Trust (BDHT) after coming to believe a burst pipe found under his flat could be the cause of his anguish.

The man, who did not want to be named, said he began noticing a ‘noxious smell’ in his Aston Fields flat in 2016 and, after putting up with it for two years, first reported it to BDHT around five years ago.

The 49-year-old claimed over the ensuing years he suffered declining health and numerous unexplained health scares, while sudden bloating meant his weight ballooned by around 2st, despite him losing his appetite.

He added his health problems led to him having to give up his job in 2020.

The man further claimed that, after yet again reporting it last month, a broken soil pipe was discovered under his kitchen floorboards and he was moved into a Premier Inn over the past three weeks while the issue was resolved.

He said, whilst living away from the flat, he had lost his bloating sensation and felt much stronger physically, leaving him both relieved and perplexed.

He added: “I used to be as strong as an ox, now I’ve lost everything, this whole ordeal has been exhausting and has ruined me physically and emotionally.

“Whilst I’ve been away from my flat, I can almost feel something horrendous leaving my body and when I’ve passed neighbours in the street, they’re all commenting how much better I look and seem.

“I want answers – the works contractor came round to my house after discovering the broken soil pipe promising me the earth and they booked me in for mental health support but this was cancelled and I haven’t heard anything since.

“No one should have to live like I have for the past few years and I’m increasingly starting to feel the broken soil pipe has had a lot to do with my declining health.”

He added the broken soil pipe had since been fixed.

BDHT chief executive Graeme Anderson, said: “Due to an ongoing legal process, we are unable to comment on the details of this case.

“However, we understand the impact the problems in his property have had, and we are working with the customer to resolve the situation.”
