BROMSGROVE District Council Labour leader Coun Peter McDonald has written a book to give a ‘true picture of the trade union movement in the 1960s and 70s’.
Coun McDonald said through ‘Memoirs of Early Working Life’ he wanted to denounce the media organisations and some historians who stated time after time that the unions ‘were a bunch of communitsts’ who ‘were only interested in destroying the country’.
He added: “The objective of the book is to show how the unions improved working conditions and marched up and down the country to protect jobs.
“Finally, how workers did not want to strike and go without, but were prepared to strike to protect their jobs and improve working conditions and quite frankly nothing has changed.”
Last week Coun McDonald presented a copy of the book to Rubery Library to make it more accessible to local people.
The book is available on Amazon.
