Bromsgrove kickboxing team 'Fighting Fit' for World Record attempt

Bromsgrove Editorial 18th Jun, 2018   0

TWO KICKBOXING coaches and their team from Bromsgrove are hoping to break the world record for the most martial arts take-downs executed in one minute.

Couple Andy and Sharon Hopwood, from Aston Fields, have been coaching ‘Team UK’ – a strong group of combat athletes – since 2017.

Andy was made the UK President of the World Kickboxing Federation and from there took on the role of head coach of Team UK last December.

If they set the new world record the coaches believe it would increase the likelihood of Team UK getting sponsored.

If that happens, it means the team would be able to afford to travel to and compete at the World Kickboxing Championships in Argentina later this year (November).

Mrs Hopwood said: “As a team we are solely reliant on sponsors or athletes paying their own way.

“We don’t get any grants or lottery funding.

“The purpose of the world record attempt is to raise awareness and funds for a talented bunch of dedicated athletes.

“We are hoping that local people and businesses will get behind Team UK so they can compete at the World Championships and bring back gold medals.”

The money would be used to help with transport around the UK and Europe.

This would include the costs of hiring a mini-bus and flights for the team as well as accommodation when they reach Argentina.

If all goes to plan, Team UK will travel to South America to compete against 140 other participating countries.

The event will be televised live on the internet to over 50 countries.

Mr Hopwood said: “We’re looking to have the best preparation possible in order to build the strongest team available.

“They will then represent Team UK in Argentina and forthcoming international tournaments.”

The world record attempt will take place on June 23 at Fighting Fit gym in Bromsgrove, which is also the home of Team UK.

Any local businesses who can help should call Andy Hopwood on 07801 237980.
