WITH a host of colourful characters and a beautiful Vintage Trains locomotive the trip on ‘The Polar Express’ from Birmingham’s Moor Street Station was one to remember.

As in the film, a mad-cap scene was set as we approached the loco – with conductors, engineers and ‘jazz hand’ chefs waiting to welcome us aboard.

We sat in our seats, on the beautiful historic train and it pulled away.

As an audio version of The Polar Express story was told, one of the ‘chefs’ on board walked up and down the aisle with the book, showing the pictures to the children and talking to them about it.

The theatrical characters sang songs, danced their way up and down the carriage and interacted with the passengers as our journey continued.

Yes, you are on a steam train heading out of Birmingham for half-an-hour and then back again but what makes this experience so magical are the ornate surroundings of the festively decorated train and the enthusiastic cast which brings the classic story to life.

The train pulls up for hot chocolate and cookies and as the train heads back to Moor Street, Father Christmas and an elf arrive to chat to families and present them with a special ‘Polar Express’ bell from his sleigh.

He asks everyone what they want for Christmas and youngsters can have their pictures taken with him.

The Polar Express is one of those films which is always a must-see as the festive season approaches and this trip on the Vintage Trains Polar Express is also well worth booking to get you and the rest of the family in the Christmas spirit.
