SHOPPERS in Bromsgrove High Street this week could be forgiven for thinking that something is missing or maybe that AE Housman has ‘disappeared for an Easter break’.
This picture was posted earlier by Bromsgrove District Council to update residents on the latest in the wobbly statue saga.
Readers need not fear that the town’s most famous poet is stuck in queues at Dover en route to a wine-tasting weekend in Bordeaux, that the Lad has gone to Shropshire or that he has been stolen by unscrupulous thieves wanting to melt him down.
We reported last week how the statue had been barriered off after being deemed unstable – a factor noticed when two boys were climbing on it.
The council has confirmed he has been removed and put into storage while work is carried out to secure his plinth ready for his return.
A spokesperson added: ” We are working to ensure that, when he returns from storage, his base is safe and secure following a wobble last month.”
The world is round, so travellers tell,
And straight through reach the track,
Trudge on, trudge on, ’twill all be well,
The way will guide one back.
A Shropshire Lad, AE Housman
