MORE THAN 4,000 people descended on Bromsgrove High Street last Saturday evening for the big Christmas lights switch-on.

The countdown was led by Bromsgrove District Council Chairman, Coun Rod Laight, who was accompanied by Isabelle who had been inspirational in overcoming some challenges in her life.

Coun Laight said: “Her teachers say Isabelle lights up a room when she enters so it is very apt that she is switching on the lights.”

Prior to the big countdown at the BirdBox, there was food, music and live entertainment which included the Rock Choir, Sounds of Steel Drums and panto characters from Hook’s Revenge, such as Peter Pan and Captain Hook himself. Blackwell Concert Band also delighted the crowds with some Christmas classics.

The Chairman of Bromsgrove District Council, Coun Rod Laight, said: “It was an honour and a pleasure to give a big Bromsgrove welcome to the thousands of people who joined us to throw the switch on this year’s Christmas period and get into the festive spirit once again.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved in putting on another memorable evening in the town, from the team at St Johns to the market stall holders and the council officers, to Kevin Ward the town crier and everyone in between.”

There was also a roadshow by community radio station BRMG which supported the event, along with the Primrose Hospice and the Friends of St John’s.

Among the street food and drink offerings were pizza, waffles, candyfloss, hot drinks and alcoholic beverages from Woodcote Brewery and Bayley’s of Bromsgrove.

After the switch-on, the Primrose Hospice’s Lights of Love Tree was also illuminated at Asda.
