WITH just two weeks until the start of the critical climate summit in Glasgow, Extinction Rebellion is calling on major banks to end their continuing investments in fossil fuels.
Bromsgrove supporters demonstrated outside Barclays and HSBC in the High Street on Monday, claiming they were highlighting the bankrolling of mining, oil drilling and deforestation that were deepening the global climate emergency.
Campaigners encouraged banking customers and passing shoppers to think about their impact when choosing where to do their banking.
Local supporter Rosemary Wormington said: “The independent BankTrack organisation reported in March the world’s 60 largest commercial and investment banks have poured 3.8trillion dollars into fossil fuels since the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015.
“Investment league tables show US banks are the biggest funders of fossil fuels but Barclays and HSBC have by far the worst records of our High Street banks.”
