A DANCE school which has been operating in Rubery, Alvechurch, Barnt Green and across south Birmingham has opened a new studio on a former factory site in Rubery.

The Dance Box Academy, was launched two years ago by Lauren McGeowen and is now based at the building at 51, The Avenue, in the village.

The school teaches lessons in a variety of genres, including ballet, tap, street dance, freestyle, lyrical and gymnastic.

Lauren, who is assisted by Abbie Raybould, has 200 children on the books so far and also offers toddler and adult classes.

She said: “Since the move we have gained loads of interest on Facebook and parents love the new space and we also have a shop selling kit and uniforms.”

There are spaces left on a few of the 40 sessions which run throughout the week from Monday to Saturday.

Lauren also has birthday parties booked for the next five weekends – people book the studio for the celebrations which are based around dance and gymnastics.

Frankley councillor Simon Morrall, who attended the opening and gave some of the activities a go.

He said: “It was a pleasure to witness the opening of the brand new Dance Box Academy.

“Seeing Lauren and Abbie convert an old factory into a fully functional dance studio has been remarkable.

“For years I have spoke at Birmingham City Council of the need to encourage young people to start-up their own businesses and seeing the aspiration, commitment and passion of these girls has been truly inspirational.

“I do hope more young people see this and realise that they too can be their own boss, if they put their mind to it.”
