Frankley animal centre cared for more than 150 animals last year

RSPCA Newbrook Farm Animal Centre in Frankley cared for more than 150 animals last Christmas.

Throughout the festive period, the animal centre took in more cats than any other animal, followed by dogs.

This year, the RSPCA is concerned more people will struggle to care for their pets due to the pressures of the pandemic on the economy.

It could see a rise in them being abandoned or neglected.

Chris Sherwood, chief executive at RSPCA, said: “Our dedicated staff will be working round the clock again this Christmas to rehabilitate and care for the animals that need us the most.

“We could not do this without the generous support of fellow animal lovers who pick up the phone to alert us when an animal is in need and who donate to help us continue our vital work.”

This December, staff are caring for Figgy Pudding: a one-year-old tabby and white cat who came into the animal centre after she was rescued by an RSPCA inspector.

Poor Figgy was a stray cat who had ingested some kind of toxic substance and had been poisoned.

She had collapsed and was twitching on arrival.

But after a few weeks in the vets having tests and treatments, she has now recovered.
